“THE TRIUMPH OF DEATH" BY PIETER BRUEGEL THE ELDER

This 1562 painting, “The Triumph of Death,” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569), illustrates the deep impression left on the European imagination by the epidemics and wars that ravaged society. Pieter Bruegel the Elder (or Brueghel), born between 1525 and 1530 in Breda in the present-day Netherlands and died on September 9, 1569, in Brussels. He was an influential Flemish Renaissance artist.
